SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. - Authorities say a man is dead following a scooter crash on Highway 299 west of the Pit One Grade near the Pit #1 Powerhouse Monday.

The California Highway Patrol says that at around 5:14 p.m., dispatch received reports of a motorcycle accident on Highway 299 west of the Pit One Grade.

Authorities say that officers from the CHP and deputies from the Shasta County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the scene of the accident.

Upon arrival at the scene, first responders located a scooter that had crashed into a ditch and dirt embankment.

The California Highway Patrol tells Action News Now that the rider of the scooter, identified as a 69-year-old male, was traveling approximately 40 miles per hour westbound on Highway 299 on a 2013 Honda scooter.

Authorities say that for reasons unknown, when the scooter entered a slight right curve in the roadway, the rider of the scooter allowed the scooter to travel to the right and into a ditch. The scooter then impacted the dirt embankment, which caused the rider to be ejected from the scooter.

The CHP says although the rider was wearing a full-faced riding helmet, he had suffered major injuries in the crash and that first responders provided lifesaving measures to the rider before he was transported to Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills.

Authorities say that the rider succumbed to his injuries just before 6 p.m. at Mayers Memorial Hospital.

The CHP says that the westbound lane of Highway 299 was under one-way traffic control for just under a hour while emergency crews worked the scene.

Authorities say that drugs and alcohol are not suspected in the crash at this time.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
