Burney man killed after scooter rollover crash on Highway 299

A man from Burney who was riding a scooter was killed after crashing along Highway 299 in eastern Shasta County on Monday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

It happened around 5:13 p.m. on Oct. 15, 2024, near the Pit #1 Grade. The CHP says the 69-year-old man was riding a 2013 Honda Scooter at about 40 mph in the westbound lanes.

As the man went around a slight right curve, he went off the road and into a dirt drainage ditch, causing him to be ejected, according to the CHP.

The scooter rider was taken to Mayers Memorial Hospital where he later died from his injuries. The CHP noted safety equipment was being used.

Officials say drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor, however, the crash remains under investigation.
