May 07, 2023Honda Unveils Two Electric Concepts | Motorcycle.com
Honda premiered two electric two-wheeler concepts at EICMA, with plans for both of them to become mass production models in the next few years. The first, an electric motorcycle dubbed the EV Fun Concept, is scheduled to go on sale in 2025 while the EV Urban scooter will presumably follow somewhere down the line.
The EV Fun is described as “Honda’s first electric sports model”. With a sharp headlight and what appear to be radiator shrouds, it gives off a futuristic streetfighter look, though that boxy battery case gives more desktop computer rather than sportbike vibes.
Technical details are sparse, but Honda says the EV Fun’s fixed battery is designed to balance light weight and quick charging performance, with CCS2 charger compatibility. Honda claims the battery provides enough cruising range for more than 100 km (62 miles).
The EV Fun Concept is equipped with an inverted fork and dual radial-mount Nissin brakes. We are a bit curious about the cone-shaped piece covering the axis at the base of the right fork tube. The left side is open, revealing a traditional axle, but the right side has that odd cover with a thick braided cable running out of it. Our suspicion is that the EV Fun Concept has two-wheel drive and the cone-shaped piece conceals a hub motor, with the rear wheel belt-driven from a motor hidden in the main body.
Honda provided even less information about the EV Urban Concept, leaving us to pick up on any visual details. The overall design has a maxi-scooter look, while the overall length and layout of the battery case and electric motor reminds us a lot of the BMW CE 04.
Like the EV Fun, the Urban also has an asymmetrical front end with a similar cone-shaped piece over the right side of the axle. It has a similar braided cable running from the cone to somewhere in the bodywork, leading us again to suspect two-wheel drive.
At the top of the front shield, we spot a digital display, which is shown in the video asking the rider “What’s your plan today?” before switching to provide navigation. Honda describes this as the scooter’s “human-machine interface”. A look at the handlebar controls show a rotary switch with a setting marked “R”, suggesting a reverse function. Below the base of the handlebars is a wide button marked with a symbol indicating a parking brake.
Beyond that, we’ll have to wait for Honda to provide more specific details about both concepts, especially as we near the targeted launch window for the EV Fun Concept.
